_ Emergent Literacy Design: Running a lap with H
Rationale: This lesson will help my tutoring student identify /h/, which is the phoneme represented by H. My student will learn to recognize /h/ in words spoken to him by learning a meaningful demonstration (exhaling sound) and the letter symbol H, practice finding /h/ in words, and apply phoneme awareness with /h/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters. Materials: Primary paper and pencil, tongue tickler chart with “Henry’s happy horse has hair”; color sheet and crayons; My H Book (Jane Belk Moncure, 2001); word cards with HATS, HEAD, HEN, HOG, HORSE, HAPPY and HELP; assessment worksheet matching pictures with words identifying words that start with /h/.
